Instructions for Proper Storage and Washing of Jeans

From Spinedenim—Keeping Your Favorite Pants in Style

Jeans are the “backbone” of every style—and the longer you wear them, the more they show off the owner’s personality. But if you wash them the wrong way, mix colors, or dry them in the wrong direction, your favorite jeans can quickly deteriorate.

So what is the standard way to wash and preserve jeans for “denim lovers”?
Spinedenim will guide you to keep your jeans in shape, colorfast, and high quality over time.

1. How often should you wash your jeans? Not the more often the better!

  • For jeans that are not too dirty, you don’t need to wash them after each wear.
  • Ideal washing frequency: after 4–6 wears, or when there is a clear smell/stain.
  • Washing too often will cause the fabric to lose its shape, fade, and reduce its durability.

✦ Tip: Hang jeans in a cool place after wearing to deodorize and refresh.

  • 2. Before washing, always turn inside out and zip
Turning it inside out helps protect the outside from friction and keeps the color better.
  • Zip and button the jeans to prevent them from twisting or losing their shape when washed.
  • Do not wash with light-colored items—especially when the jeans are new.

✦ Suggestion: Use a mesh laundry bag if washing by machine to reduce friction and prevent fraying.

3. Handwashing is optimal—machine washing is also possible, but must be done properly

  • Gently handwashing with cold/mildly cold water and mild soap is best.
  • If washing by machine, choose the delicate cycle and cold water to limit shrinkage/fading.
  • Avoid using strong-smelling fabric softeners—they will remove the natural scent of raw denim.

✦ Especially do not use bleach—it will cause the fabric to fade and weaken quickly.

4. Do not wring hard—do not dry in strong sunlight

  • After washing, just squeeze gently to remove excess water—do not twist.
  • Dry in a cool place; avoid direct sunlight, as sunlight will fade the fabric.
  • Hang the pants by the waistband or fold them in half over a hanger; avoid clipping the hem, as this will stretch the pants.

✦ Pro tip: Do not dry in a dryer—the heat will shrink and lose shape.

5. Storage—Do not fold the pants for too long; do not store with damp clothes

  • Hang jeans instead of folding them—this helps keep the shape straight, avoiding creases.
  • If you must fold, fold along the seam, not across the body of the leg.
  • Do not store jeans in a humid closet—denim is prone to mold and odor.

✦ A few desiccant bags or activated carbon tablets in the wardrobe are a great help.

CONCLUSION FROM SPINEDENIM
Denim is durable—but it also needs to be cherished to keep its shape and quality.
With a few simple tips from Spinedenim, your favorite pants will always maintain their strong, free spirit—and accompany you in every move.
